Room of the Week: Jennifer Eden, Occupy Design

Designer: Jennifer Eden, Occupy Design

Location: Vancouver

Goal: To design the ideal man’s apartment in this downtown Vancouver sub-penthouse, located in the Vita Building.

Inspiration: “I had a picture of the man that lived in this apartment in my head throughout the design process,” designer Jennifer Eden says. “I thought a lot about men's fashion as well, paying a lot of attention to material and details.”

“Masculine but refined was the goal,” Eden adds. “I didn't want to be scared off by dark colors, but going too far with that wouldn't have worked. I also really wanted to bring subtle texture into the room; the linen bedding, area rug and the headboard.”

Breakdown: The was the focal point of the room. Eden custom designed the bed, and millwork company Calibri Design fabricated it. The natural oak bench at the end of the bed is from 18Karat, and matches the oak flooring. Sherwin-Williams Intellectual Gray paint is warm and sophisticated; it layers perfectly with the Belgian bed linens from Libeco. A geometric Nuevo Apollo Pendant hangs above the bed, adding a moment of structure to the room.

Tips to Get the Look: “Don’t be afraid of dark colors.,” Eden recommends. “Go for the dark headboard or the dark wall color and balance it with a lighter wood accent. In this case we used natural oak. Stick in the grays and neutral tones when it comes to your textiles, and look to texture over pattern first.”
