Room of the Week: Gaile Guevara Interior Design
Category: Living Room
Designer: Gaile Guevara, Gaile Guevara Interior Design
Location: West Vancouver
Goal: A family moving from the prairies of Saskatchewan to the hills of Rockridge, West Vancouver, wanted to take advantage of the city views from their living room, while keeping the space comfortable for hanging out around the fire. They hired interior designer Gaile Guevara to help upgrade the look of their house to a chicer, more urban style.
Inspiration: “We drew inspiration from the view of cityscape,” Guevara says. “We came up with a classic and timeless black and white scheme so that the perimeter landscape was framed from the interior's large windows.”
Breakdown: With a modern look in mind, and a palette to match, Guevara had a custom sectional made by Scali\Durante and upholstered with Donghia fabric. The cushions are easily moved to accommodate views of the cityscape or the fireplace, which has a custom concrete hearth by Sticks + Stones Furniture and includes a custom sand pan from Vancouver Gas Fireplaces. The Basaltina tile surround is from Greg Beatty Consultants. “Our design goal was to enhance the space with a few renovation upgrades,” Guevara explains. Above the fireplace, an abstract painting by artist Kenneth Torrance enhances the sophisticated palette. A custom Pendant 28 series in white is from Bocci, and bar stools are Lapalma by Inform Interiors.
Tips to Get the Look: “Always choose function first, and then aesthetics,” Guevara suggests. “Even with a strong aesthetic opinion, figuring out how you want to feel and live in a space will dictate how to best use a space.”
